Chapter 32 - Can you run faster than the Moon?
The camp was cold. Everything was cold on the Moon. The King was already bored with the place. The cold reminded him of Winter, and he thought of all the Europeans who were also cold but weren’t sitting eating magical sausages in Axe Axewound’s three-man tent, which was always warm. He looked across at Carolyn, who had finished her own dinner. It was just the King and Carolyn in the tent right now. Everyone else was outside, sitting on Gappy. “Carolyn,” said the King. “I want you to tell me everything about your husband. We came here to find him. Once we find him, we can go home.” Carolyn closed her eyes, breathed in a very large amount of air all at once, and thought of her husband.
“His name is Rick,” she said. “He’s an astronaut who got lost. NASA put him up here so that he could write their logo everywhere, but he wasn’t interested in that. I think he just wanted to get away. He’s very special.” She paused for a moment. “I’m having an affair with Burzum. He’s my psychiatrist. I think Rick knows. I think that’s why he’s up here.”
The King was an expert tracker. He could find someone by just knowing a few details about them. His mind was like a giant database, just full of awesome facts. He could smell anything. He could tell how tall someone was just by the sound of their voice. Everything Carolyn told him was important. The King asked about Rick’s height, weight, family history and sexual preferences. While they were talking about this, the King considered having sex with Carolyn, but he decided not to because sex in space might be dangerous and everyone was waiting outside for him to finish talking to Carolyn. Then came the most important question. “Does Rick love Europe?” he asked.
“More than anything,” sighed Carolyn.
The King emerged from the tent and spoke to his friends aboard Gappy. His mind was full of buzzing facts and lightning. He scooped up some moondust in his wooden hands and sniffed it deeply. Then he looked up. He was listening. Then, all of a sudden, he drew mighty Cutty from his scabbard, held the sword over his head and walked off into the distance. Axe Axewound quickly hopped off Gappy, folded his tent back in to his flaming axe, grabbed Carolyn, hopped back on to Gappy and set the reindeer to follow his King.
“The King knows what he’s doing,” said Axe Axewound to some of the newer additions to the Adventure Party. “He has immaculate senses.”
Once Gappy had caught up with the King, he began to run. He ran so fast that his arms trailed behind him. He ran so fast that he left a cloud of dust behind him. Gappy was almost able to keep up with him. When there was a rock or a log or a pile of ants in the way, the King jumped over them effortlessly. The King had not run like this very often in his life. He could only do it on certain levels. Two days later, they arrived at a city.
Inside the city, a spybird landed on a woman’s shoulder. The spybird made some bird noises in the woman’s ear.
“The King of Europe is here?!” shouted the woman, really loud. The bird repeated what it had said the first time.
“Send out the Assassinatrix!” she screamed.
